Design Process

As we all know, the design process is not linear. I’ve arranged these steps as linearly as possible, while keep in mind that a lot of things run concurrently while working on a project.

The Idea

Like many of my project ideas, the idea Truss came from a random thought - what if I could change the music in my bathroom by knocking on my shower door?

Research

With my idea, I did research into already existing technologies, as well as market research to validate the need for this product.

Architecture

Using my research and engineering background, I came up with what the system architecture should look like as that gives structure to form exploration.

Make Connections

With any project, I look for allegories or inspiration in the built environment and nature. For Truss I was inspired by trusses and the forming and shape of dunes.

Turn Themes into Visual Inspiration

In this stage, I used imagery to convey my thematic inspirations.

Ideation Sketching

After understanding the architecture and having a clear sense of inspiration, I began to sketch some concepts.

Design Refinement

With a form in mind, I used Rhino to play with proportion and arrive at the final form.

Rendering

Growing up immersed in consumer electronics, I’ve come to appreciate how far a render goes in selling a product. I dedicated a significant amount of time to refining the appearance of Truss in KeyShot.
